Lil Wayne, Kodak Black Among Donald Trump Pardons
The outgoing president of the United States, Donald Trump, granted pardon to 143 people on Wednesday.
The 38-year old American rapper pleaded guilty to carrying a loaded, gold-plated handgun aboard a private fight in 2019. He was set to face up to 10 years imprisonment at a hearing next week.
Trump and Wayne had met last year during his election campaign where the rapper had supported the former president’s policies, the proposed justice reform included.
Lil Wayne was not the only one granted clemency, another notable person that was pardoned was Stephen Bannon, the former White House Chief strategist.
A statement released by the White House to this effect read, "Bannon has been an important leader in the conservative movement and is known for his political acumen,"
Bannon was charged with defrauding Trump supporters in a bid to raise private funds for building the US-Mexico border wall last year. He pleaded not guilty.
Bannon had left his role at conservative website News following his appointment to the White House in 2016. He was exiled from the White House after a clash with others in 2017. Recently, he was banned from Twitter after he posted a tweet calling for the beheading of Anthony Fauci and Christopher Wray, director of the FBI.
The list of those pardoned runs long and raises the eyebrow of many. Kodak Black, a 23-year old rapper, sentenced over weapons charges after pleading guilty was also granted a pardon.
Anthony Levandowski, a former engineer with Google who pleaded guilty to stealing secret technology and was sentenced in August at San Francisco to 18 months imprisonment which was to begin when the Covid-19 pandemic was reduced. William Alsup described Levandowski’s involvement in Silicon Valley’s litigation as “the biggest trade secret” he had ever seen.
The former mayor of Detroit, Kwame Kilpatrick was also pardoned along with Elliot Broidy and Sholam Weiss
