What is going on with college campuses? Let me tell you, when I was growing up and I heard about my family going to college I thought it was all about having fun, trying new things, and getting a good degree to get a good job coming out of college. Well, I was DEFINITELY wrong. Not just a little bit wrong, I mean, it was nothing like that. The longer I was in college the worse experiences I had and maybe it was just me and the major I chose to go into but the more people I talked to throughout the university, the more I knew that was not true. There are a lot of things I could talk about with what is wrong with colleges throughout the country but I was asked to talk about this one specific topic, college bullying.
At first hand it's like come on now, we are talking about people who are 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 years old. You must be joking right? Well I am not. Let me make this clear that I am not talking about kids getting their heads put in toilets or getting wedgies or things that happen in the movies. I am talking about verbal bullying and clear exclusion of others because of their views, religion, and political beliefs. It seems weird to me that we are in the year 2021 and it seems that we are in an age where people want everyone to be accepted for who they are and whatever their beliefs may be but that isn't happening.
When I was on college campuses I ran into many different people from all over the world who had a ton of different views and beliefs. I honestly didn't care about any of that, the only thing that mattered to me was if you were nice and I liked your personality then we would be cool no matter what the other differences are. It was clear from day one that was not the case when it came to others. I have had teachers tell other students that they are racist for their beliefs, that their opinions don't matter because of their race, and racial slurs because of their race and what they believe in. I have talked to others who have been bullied in their dorms by their roommates from having different political views. One friend of mine had to move out and change the complete location of her apartment because it got so bad. I have had a teacher tell me that only white people can be racist. I had to listen to the author of the 1619 project when she came to my campus and she told us that minorities know better than white people and it shows when they vote and we need to listen to them if we are going to change society. My best friend had things stolen from him, people lie about him, people reject him for simply being friends with a white guy. I have not been asked to be on a basketball team simply for being white. I have been in a class where the teacher asked who would want to be black and said that because no one raised their hands, it shows your privilege and you must be racist. In my internship, I was judged for asking questions and it was considered insensitive because of the color of my skin. I have been judged, rejected, casted out because of my skin color, my political beliefs, and my gender. I have seen and heard from other people who are not like me be judged, casted out, and rejected because of their political beliefs and gender.
I have listened and heard of many different views from around the globe and I don't ever agree with these people 100% and that is okay, we are all individuals and we are supposed to be different to help people around us grow and learn from each other. I might not know what it's like to be Hispanic, a women, black, Asian, gay, transgender, Muslim or anything else that makes me different from the rest of the world but heres the thing, if I can't say that I know what its like to be them, then people shouldn't be aloud to know what its like to be me. There's bad stereotypes for every different individual out in this world and it is clearly not right but these same people who want to say what it's like to be them or be their skin color or be their religion also don't know what it's like to be white. I have been called a racist, rapists, school shooter, mass murder, homophobic, xenophobic and I have had not been accepted to jobs because I am a male and the simple stereotype that has. Message is clear, don't judge me and I won't judge you. We need to listen and learn from one another.
I am not here to complain or to get pity. I have still been very successful for my age, graduating college, getting my first job, rescuing animals, volunteering my time to help others who have less than me and I have a family that loves me and supports me even though I make plenty of mistakes along the way. I still have my bestfriend and I still ignore all of the things that are said about me because I have realized that the only person accountable for where I am in life is me. I am here to show that inclusion, diversity, and acceptance is going away on college campuses and that it needs to change, we need to have a real discussion about people with opposition views and we need to encourage dialog between people who are different because that is the only way we can heal and come together.
We are all different in many ways, not just by the color of our skin, our views and our political beliefs. People who grow up in the same households can turn out completely different from one another for the simple reason that they are each individuals with their own perceptions of what is going on. With what is going on in not only my college campus but college campuses around the country, it seems to me that we have a huge problem of diversity when it comes to thinking and that is going to become a huge problem if it continues.
I have seen a lot of strange things happen in college but I can say that one of the strangest is seeing the people who preach inclusion, diversity, and acceptance being the same people who bend their own rules to have special privileges so they don't have to see, hear, or be around people who have different beliefs, views, and political beliefs as them. This is not what MLK Jr. wanted our future to look like, this has to change, no, this needs to change.
